Course Description: This
course supplies students with medical vocabulary, common idioms,
and the conversational Spanish needed to help them communicate
with their Spanish-speaking patients. The curriculum does not cover
highly specialized medical terminology, but it does provide students
with basic vocabulary in layman's terms.
During the Medical Spanish tutoring, students focus
on practical situations, such as admission, the general interview
/ medical history, illnesses, allergies, remedies and prescriptions,
hospital, specialists, parts of the body/organs, emergencies, pregnancy,
and surgery.
The Medical Spanish program complements the school's
general small-group Spanish courses. The school offers the program
through private tutoring 3 to 5 times a week, 1-2 hours per session.
Usually, the sessions take place immediately following the small-group
class in general Spanish. However, the school also offers the course
as a small-group class for students traveling together.
Students at an intermediate Spanish level or higher
who are not interested in general Spanish instruction may enroll
for the Medical Spanish program without enrolling in a general
Spanish class, if desired.
